| I have all the rice in the world at my disposal.
I put one grain of rice on the first plate. Then I put twice as many on the next plate Then I put twice as many again on the 3rd plate and so on.
How many plates can I put rice on before all the rice in the world is used up? | |

| I'm sure your estimate is waaaaay too high. Remember, the first plate will only have one grain, but the 10th will have 1024 grains, the 20th will have just over 1048000 grains, the 30th plate will have around a billion grains, and so on. According to the International Rice Research Institute,, World rice production in 2004 was just under 610 million tonnes. The question is, how many grains is that? People have thought about that: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_grains_of_rice_are_in_a_one_kilogram_bag_of_normal_riceIt says there are 36590 grains in a kilo of rice. That sounds a reasonable estimate. Based on this, 2004 world rice production was 36,590 * 1000 * 610 * 10^6 grains or about 2.1 * 10^16 grains. Based on this just over 50 plates will be needed to hold the 2004 production. | |

| Like you say, fitting the grains on the plates will be a problem. I just wanted to make the point that as you double numbers repeatedly, they get unexpectedly big. It's like Moore's Law about computing power: every year or two computing power doubles. After a few decades computing power has gone up tremendously and will continue to do so. (Moore is the guy who founded Intel -- see here: http://www.intel.com/technology/mooreslaw/index.htm) | |
